It's enough to look around to reazlize the variety of flip-up Helmet (better known as a modula helmet) is increasing. Modular hlmet users vary from moped to big touring and even on/off bikes
Leaving aside personal liking, many users appreciate comfort and cosiness of flip-up helmets, especially during summertime, because of the feeling of fresh air on the face. Having said that, we wanted to try a convertible as a third option. This is sealed in a similar way to a full face helmet but turns into a real jet helmet whit a chin protections rotating nearly 360 degrees and stopping at the back of the neck.
This rotation might appear useless or even extreme to some but you should think about the fact that the chin protection of many flip-up helmets in the upper position have a high wind resistance and will push your head back when riding at high speed. This is not true for all convertibles but we found many. With the “Convert” by LS this will never happen as the open chin protection will be right at the back of your head well protected from the wind.
A simple button on the chin unlocks and rotates completely, opening in one shot both the chine protection and the visor. The later turns and stops in such a position that can protect eyes and face from flies even while in jet position. This button has been engineered to prevent undesired openings. We think it’s a valid alternative especially in the summer when we travel back and forth from country side to the city. We can use the closed helmet during the journey and once back in town we can open it with one single click. It’s really an efficient alternative which we can define as full-optional. We cannot pretend to have this full range of options with a click open face helmet, but is not heavy either.
A comfortable side command triggers a mechanism releasing and independent sun visor. The rotation mechanism of the visor is very fascinating due to an eccentric that simplifies the whole operation. The linings are excellent and are removable for easy cleaning. Under the side cheek lining you can find the earphones sockets fitting any interphone brand.
The external shape is a little different from usual helmets, with a space-inspired design, due to the width of the chin protection at the level of the rotation mechanism. We like it, but of course this is subjective.
In the end, we consider the “FF393 Convert” a great helmet, and the innovative opening mechanism is very useful and practical.
